![]() Go on the early ferry as you can not necessarily get on the ferry prior to your booking time. The ferry is not booked- you join the queue and take your chances. It is best to book a tour time with the distillery ( costs £6 and includes one tasting). Jura distillery is about 20 minutes from the ferry terminal connecting the island to Islay. If you can, I'd recommend leaving Islay for half a day or pretty much a full day, and experience the Jura Distillery. Jura distillery, had a pack of 3 miniatures, which gave a wider experience of their product. Most, but not all (7 out of the 9) have miniature bottles for sale, though the miniatures are usually of the more identifiable and readily available varieties, whereas half the fun is trying those types that are not readily available in the shops. The staff at Jura gave me a couple of tastes. ![]() The staff are always friendly, and will offer a little taste, even if you are not on a distillery tour or a formal tasting tour, if you are polite. There are usually various tours and tasting combinations, as is the case with Jura. All of these distilleries try to be individuals. Some of these 9 distilleries are up-market, having had money lavished on them by their owners others, like Jura, still look like small operations, but that doesn't diminish the quality of their product. However, a trip to the Jura distillery and a couple of the Islay ones is possible in a day, as two are close to the ferry terminal. Some on Islay are more remote than others some are close together, effectively in clusters. It possible to drive around Islay and see all 8 in one day, but adding Jura is nigh impossible, as you need to take a ferry there and back. ![]() The Scotches here are renown for their peatiness, but that's not always the case the distilleries diversify when they can. Add the distillery on the neighbouring island of Jura, and that's 9 in the vicinity. The island of Islay, off the west coast of Scotland, boasts 8 individual, working whisky distilleries.
