The Socs' idea of having a good time is beating up Greasers like Ponyboy Curtis. Youngsters in a small Oklahoma town have split into two gangs, divided by money, tastes and attitude. It is one of The Originals from Penguin - iconic, outspoken, first. 2, 10.The Outsiders is an outstanding story of teenage rebellion, written when the author was only 17 years old. "The Outsiders." New York Times Book Review. She has been accepted as an important writer by both critics and young readers. Hinton's work became better known because of the movies. The Outsiders showcased several now-famous actors, including Tom Cruise. Matt Dillon returned to star in both The Outsiders and Rumble Fish, and Hinton and the then-young actor became friends. The first movie, Tex, which starred Matt Dillon, made her realize that movies could be as effective as books at telling a story. Though she was afraid at first that a movie version would destroy her original intentions for the story, she soon found that wasn't true. Several popular movies have been made of her books. Hinton is one of the most popular children's writers, and has been so for decades. She has said will always find her inspiration in her own experiences. Hinton has also written several books for young children, inspired by her son Nick. She has always believed that teenagers had important thoughts and experiences, and they needed to be treated as important. She believes her stories are still relevant today, especially in a time of gang violence and school shootings. She says that this was very frustrating for her, because she wanted to write beautiful sentences, but she knew he wouldn't say beautiful things. Hinton says that she wrote Rusty-James' character as different from many of her other narrators. ![]() Rumble Fish, another story about teenage life, tells the story of Rusty-James, who fights, gets drunk, and wishes for something better. When his brother sells his horse to pay the bills, Tex is determined to find the horse and get him back. Her other stories include Tex, about a teenager who loves horses. Hinton usually writes her stories in the first person, to reinforce the strong individual identities of her characters. They are about individuals, like Ponyboy and Dallas and Johnny-three very different boys who happen to belong to the same social group. While today there are many books about drugs, gangs, abusive families, etc., Hinton's stories stand out because they confront issues like these, but they are not about these issues. No book at that time described what some kids her age had to deal with. (She describes them as "Mary Jane Goes to the Prom.") She wanted a book that would reflect the experiences she saw going on around her. She felt that the books for people her age lacked realism. She didn't want to be that way, so she spent time with boys and wrote about them. They waited around for their boyfriends, concentrating on their hair and makeup. She wanted to write about boys because, she says, at that time girls didn't do much. She understood that the fighting between gangs was useless, because every kid was an individual, not just a unit in a group. This allowed her to see "the big picture" better than most. She remembers herself as able to talk to all different groups in high school, since she didn't belong to any of them. Her ideas about important stories have never strayed far from home. This is true for most of her books, even when she names the town something else. Though the town is never named in The Outsiders, it is recognizable as Tulsa. After a boy not unlike Dallas Winston was killed by the police, she decided, like Ponyboy at the end of the story, to tell the world about life in her hometown. She wrote T he Outsiders as a sixteen year old loner at a high school where almost everyone belonged to one group or another. Her simple explanation is, "I've always been a tomboy." She would usually rather talk about her horses than her writing, since she has answered so many of the same questions in interviews over the years. Those who know her work may be surprised that she is a woman, since her narrators are almost always teenage boys. Susan Eloise Hinton was born in 1948, and has spent most of her life in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

"Blind reliance on measurements can be misleading ‐ one needs to tie those measurements back to subjective perception. ![]() The room response gives a picture of the steady state SPL, where sound generation and sound dissipation in the room have reached their equilibrium." -Linkwitz The resulting curves must not be taken as a 1:1 representation of what is heard as loudness at different frequencies. " The room response must be averaged to recognize trends in the summation of direct and reflected signals at the microphone. So off-axis listening is probably in order - as seems to be common for budget/more mainstream speakers. That said, the on-axis is still tilted a little up. This suggests that the ideal target slope may depend on the loudspeaker’s directivity." Test One includes mostly 2-way designs whereas the larger sample includes several 3-way and 4-way designs that tend to have wider dispersion (hence smaller negative target slopes) at mid and high frequencies. "The degree of tilt varies among curves for Test One and the larger sample. I know Amir found this bright, and the predicted in-room curve tilts downward less we normally expect But in case anyone is thinking about writing it off for being too bright right away, one thing to keep in mind about the predicted in-room curve is that it in general, it seems wider directivity speakers may perform better with less of a tilt in the PIR. Love that wide directivity and surprisingly good vertical control too. Good stuff! It seems the claims Infinity speakers are "a poor man's revel" may just hold true. The rest of the performance both objectively and subjective is very good and not at all that of a cheap junk speaker. Whether on purpose (to sell better in showroom) or not, the elevated highs are a bit of an issue but fortunately that cam be tamed with equalization. The Infinity R162 definitely seems to have benefited from good design. Overall, the woofer and bass performance is the start of the show. Indeed, no matter how much power I pumped into the R162, it handled it without bottoming out! However, the M20 could not remotely play as loud as the R162! Its woofer would break up at much lower levels than the Infinity. I can't help but think how good this speaker would be with a simple in-line resistor with the tweeter to kill off some of that excess energy.įor comparison, I put in the Revel M20 in the same spot and it was a relief to hear a less elevated highs. This so called spinorama shows us just about everything we need to know about the speaker with respect to tonality and some flaws: In a nutshell, the measurements show the actual sound coming out of the speaker independent of the room.Īll measurements are reference to tweeter axis with the woofer grill left on as indicated Frequency resolution is 2.7 Hz.Īcoustic measurements can be grouped in a way that can be perceptually analyzed to determine how good a speaker can be used. Both of these factors enable testing in ordinary rooms yet results that can be more accurate than anechoic chamber. It also measures the speaker at close distance ("near-field") which sharply reduces the impact of room noise. This is a robotic measurement system that analyzes the speaker all around and is able (using advanced mathematics and dual scan) to subtract room reflections (so where I measure it doesn't matter). There are very few good-quality file managers for the iPhone (iExplorer, iFunbox) and AnyTrans counts itself among them. Not only can you find out details about apps installed on your iDevice, but you can also browse through the file system. The other feature of AnyTrans that I like very much because I rely on things like iFile a lot to clear out the cache is the built-in app manager. It’s made more straightforward by allowing one iOS device to talk directly to another iOS device through AnyTrans. What is even more interesting is that if you want to transfer media between two iOS devices, AnyTrans will do that too. Learn more about it If you’re tired of iTunes, give AnyTrans a try. Sure it’s a slightly costly affair at 39.99 (single license) and 59.99 (almost unlimited license) but it’s worth every penny you pay for. Below are some alternatives with more reviews: 1 Jamf Pro 4. Overall, AnyTrans is one heck of software that can effectively replace iTunes if you start working with it. In that sense, it considers your iPhone as a physical drive but works just fine with the sync.Īdding music and photos/videos (as playlists or as individual files) couldn’t get simpler than this. There are not enough reviews of AnyTrans for G2 to provide buying insight. It also prevents duplication and constant re-sync in order to copy files to your iOS device. If that wasn’t enough, it provides unlimited transfers across the same as well as cross-platform, which steals the show at the end of the day and makes it recommendable for everyone with a data-driven device. It gets rid of the unnecessary “library” concept (although you can still use it). Single tap for functions like data backup, restore, organization, or edit, and that too at a speed which is miles ahead of any other service in this segment already gives it an upper hand. ConclusionĪnyTrans has broken all the barriers and come across all the data management problems to make life easier for everyone. This all becomes even more relieving when you realize that this process can be done unlimited times without any barriers. Want to migrate from iPhone to Android or vice-versa? AnyTrans holds the ground in this situation and seamlessly completes the process. Users can experience it first-hand that AnyTrans is not only efficient In managing the data of the whole system but also lightning fast at it, and the best part being that all this happens at a single tap.Īs AnyTrans is available on multiple platforms, it facilitates data transfer, restore, and backup as per the user’s comfort on various platforms. It does not even matter where the users have stored their files or if users are scared of losing a file in some deep corner in the phone, as this application makes sure that it backs up and manages data from the whole phone. What all can AnyTrans do?ĪnyTrans can manage all the files of a user in a hassle-free way with minimal use of resources. The OFFSET function allows you to reference a specific range of cells based on a reference point. This may require you to change any reference manually. This function is helpful if you often create dynamic reports. Related: Excel Skills: Definition and Examples When to use the OFFSET function? Positive numbers count height downwards and width to the right of the second reference point and using negative numbers results in the opposite. You can also use negative numbers for height and width. If you don't input a figure into the height and width arguments, Excel uses one by default to extract only a single cell, being the second reference point. You can add a figure to width to indicate how wide a returned range is if you want to extract multiple columns. You can add a figure to height to indicate how tall the returned range is if you want to extract multiple rows. If you input zero, Excel uses the same column as the reference cell. If you select a range of cells as the reference, Excel still uses the top-left cell of the range as the reference point. If you have a table of data, it's practical to select the top-left cell of the table as the reference point. The function requires users to enter a reference point to identify the range of cells to extract. Some of these 9 distilleries are up-market, having had money lavished on them by their owners others, like Jura, still look like small operations, but that doesn't diminish the quality of their product. However, a trip to the Jura distillery and a couple of the Islay ones is possible in a day, as two are close to the ferry terminal. Some on Islay are more remote than others some are close together, effectively in clusters. It possible to drive around Islay and see all 8 in one day, but adding Jura is nigh impossible, as you need to take a ferry there and back. ![]() The Scotches here are renown for their peatiness, but that's not always the case the distilleries diversify when they can.
